WHY DONATE TO TEACHER GRANTS?
We believe that a lack of creative teaching tools and basic supplies shouldn’t keep them from doing their jobs. Nationally, teachers spend between $500 and $750 of their own funds for classroom needs. This is especially challenging for our teachers due to the high housing costs in the Santa Barbara Unified School District. The Santa Barbara Education Foundation’s Teacher Grants Program sends your donations directly into classrooms supporting teachers’ requests.
Thanks to donors like you, SBEF has supported teacher-initiated grants totaling $888,000 since 2018. These grants fund critically needed updated teaching supplies and tools, classroom libraries, and seed money for new projects and field trips.
Help us meet our goal is to send $200,000 a year into classrooms. We keep overhead low and track results. Every grant request is reviewed by an independent panel to ensure that your funds are supporting projects that will make the biggest impact on students’ learning experiences.
Make a single, monthly, or multi-year gift to Teacher Grants today. Our teachers will never run out of good ideas for their classrooms. Let’s make their dreams a reality!

“When I saw the expression on his face and how much fun he was having, I was crying! It made my heart sing!… Words can not express my excitement watching this transformation…it was like watching a caterpillar turn into a beautiful butterfly”.– Elizabeth Brooks Kindergarten Teacher at Adams Elementary.

Margie Yahyavi Fund for Excellence in Music Education
We lost one of our communities greatest advocates for education when Margie Yahyavi, our former SB Education Foundation Executive Director (2009-2022), died in 2024. She left a long list of victories in bringing critically needed funds and programs to Santa Barbara schools. One of Margies most enduring accomplishments was prioritizing music education in grades K-6 and building enrichment programs in junior high and high schools to support emerging musicians. Today, Santa Barbara Unified is one of the few districts in California where students in grades K-6 receive one 30-45 minute lesson each week with a credentialed music teacher with a curriculum that aligns with the California Standards for Visual and Performing Arts. Music education remains a top priority of the SBEF thanks to Margie.
SBEF donors annually support programs like Keep the Beat and Bravo! Now we have a Teacher Grant exclusively dedicated to fostering high-quality music education.
Established with the support of her family and dedicated donors, the Margie Yahyavi Fund for Excellence in Music Education continues her legacy. Educators can now apply for dedicated funding to support creative and cultural programming that promotes student engagement and collaboration in the classroom and community and foster student concerts, workshops, and other musical events.
School budgets will never fully fund the needs of inspired music teachers and the students they serve. The Margie Yahyavi Fund for Excellence in Music Education is dedicated to ensuring that music teachers can apply for a music-specific funding request that helps them take their work–and their students to the next level. You can make a restricted gift to the Margie Fund below or by calling SBEF’s Development Office at 805-284-9125, ext. 705.
